The Story

Amy Weirich, District Attorney General for Shelby County claims that the crime happened in North Memphis at a convenience store.

After a one-week trial, Marcus Green (43), was found guilty by the Criminal Court jury. Green was found guilty in three cases: attempted first-degree murder; using a firearm to commit a dangerous felony’s offense and being in possession of a firearm by a felon. Deonta Baskin (44) was also found guilty.

Marceles Scurlock was 27, was killed and shot by his cousins at a shop on Oakwood Street in the late afternoon of May 23, 2018. According to the district attorneys office.

The fight between the men was caught on surveillance camera. Scurlock attempted to flee but was stopped by Baskin. Baskin held him while Green struck him in the head. Baskin pistol-whipped him.

Baskin stated to police that he began shooting many bullets before being hit in the side with Marcus Green Arrested. This seemed to be an accident.

Scurlock also collapsed on the roadside, and Baskin continued shooting as Baskin left the scene. Scurlock sustained 15 bullet wounds, and was declared deceased at the crime scene.

Baskin was convicted of attempted murder in 2007. Marcus Green Arrested and sentenced to 24 years in jail. He served his first ten year sentence. He was released in 2017 on parole for the North Memphis murder. Baskin will be sentenced in the end by Judge Lee Coffee. Prosecutors plan to press for a term that prevents Baskin from ever leaving prison.

Green is required to spend at least one year in prison for his crime.
