Georgia requires a commercial driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle commercially (CDL). Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has set the regulations and requirements for commercial driver’s licenses.

To become eligible for a CDL you will need to pass a driving test as well as a specialized knowledge exam. These exams are done to lower your chance of being in a truck accident.

While you focus on improving, an Atlanta Truck Accident Attorney investigates the truck accident and determines who is at fault, collects evidence, files claims, and handles all legal matters.

What Georgia Commercial Driver’s Licenses Do You Have?

Georgia has three types of commercial driver’s licenses.

Driver’s Licence Class A Commercial

Class A commercial driver’s license is required for driving a car with a gross vehicular weight rating (GVWR), of 26001 lbs or more and towing a car over 10,000 lbs. These are the most common Class A CDL-covered vehicles:

  • 18-wheelers
  • large rights
  • Semi-trucks
  • Tractor-trailers
  • Transporters of livestock
  • Truck trailers
  • tanker vans

Driver’s Licence Class B, Commercial

A Class B commercial driver’s permit is required for driving a vehicle with a gross weight rating of 26,001 lbs or more, and a trailer that weighs under 10,000 lbs.

A Class C CDL is necessary to obtain a Class C license. Class B CDL holders can drive vehicles in Class C.

Class C Commercial Driver’s License

You can drive a car that is capable of carrying at least 16 persons, including the driver, with a Class-C CDL. You are also allowed to drive smaller trucks that transport hazardous products and require hazmat placards.

Endorsements for Georgia Commercial Drivers’ Licenses

An endorsement application for a commercial driver’s license is possible. With a CDL endorsement, you can transport particular loads.

CDL Adoptions include:

  • For hazardous chemicals, the endorsement H is necessary.
  • To drive a tanker carrying liquids or gases, you must have the N Endorsement.
  • A P endorsement is required for any bus that has at least 16 passengers. If the bus is a schoolbus, you must pass the federal background checks.
