Malaysia is a country that many foodies love. There are many great culinary options in Malaysia, including cendol in Penang and Peranakan cuisines in Malacca. Johor Bahru, or JB, is a city that’s still a great food destination. Let’s now take a look at the top 7 hawker food stalls in Johor Bahru.

1. G. Cheong Fun Restaurant

G. Cheong Fun Restaurant can be difficult to decide on a jollibee-menu because there are six cheong options to choose from. You can also zhng-up CCF with house-made yong Tau foo.

The cheong fun is made fresh in-house using freshly-milled rice flour. It is served slightly chilled to preserve the noodles’ integrity. Anson (RM5.50/S$1.80) is the most unusual. Here preserved turnip and heibee are steamed into the cheong enjoyment. Kampar Curry (RM3/S$1) and Red Sweet Sauce/RM3/S$1 respectively, while Black Sweet Sauce/RM3/S$1 and Scallion Oil (RM3/S$1) are all delicious, flavorful dishes.

2.Restoran Wantan Mee DS

Restoran Wantan DS offers cheap and delicious wonton mee. They even make their egg noodles on the premises. A bowl of BBQ Pork Noodles starts at RM5.80/S$1.90. This includes a large serving of noodles with fatty char Siew, fried wonton, and boiled wonton. You can also get Minced Pork noodles for RM4.80/S$1.60. This replaces the char Siew with minced pork.

KL-style black sauce wonton, mee is the default, but you can request the Traditional white. You should try the heibee sambal, which is really good. Also, you can add house-fried pork oil to enhance the noodles’ flavor. You can also add Fried Wantan (10 pieces) or Dumpling Soup (1 piece) to the side.

3.Restoran Hua Mui JB

Restoran Hua Mui JB is the next place to go if you have been to JB’s other famous chicken chop restaurant. They were established in 1946 and have been cooking Hainanese-style meals for over 70 years.

There are many dishes on the menu, including nasi rebus, mee rebus, and more. We recommend that you stick to the Hainanese chicken chop (RM17.90/S$5.80). You must dip it in the accompanying brown sauce for maximum enjoyment, and finish the meal with Kopi Cincau (RM4.50/~S$1.50)–it’s just the right amount of sweet and rich, with fine shreds of grass jelly for texture.

4.Bukit Changar Roti Canai

The “open-concept” kitchen will sound like a well-oiled machine. As the dough turns from a soft white to a golden brown, watch in anticipation. Each prata kosong, also known as roti kanai in Malaysia, costs only RM1/S$0.40. Order their egg roticanai (RM2/S$0.70), for a heartier breakfast.

5.Fa Ge Lok Lok

Lok Lok is synonymous with JB’s late-night supper spots. Fa Ge Lok Lok Lok is open daily from 7pm until the early hours of the morning. They also offer delicious skewers. We love the humour of this food truck’s name. The wide variety of skewers available starts at RM1.50/S$0.50.

If you’ve never had lok lok before, follow these steps:

There are over 50 types of skewers available, including bacon rolls, wontons and mantou. You can separate the skewers depending on how you prefer them to be prepared: deep-fried, grilled or boiled. Fill a styrofoam container with peanut sauce, sweet sauce, Thai chilli sauce or garlic ginger chilli paste. Enjoy!

6.Restoran Ya Wang

Restoran Ya Wang is so popular among JB troopers, that I almost didn’t feel the need to include it on this list. It is well-known as the official consultant for Dian XiaoEr’s Ten Wonder Herbs Roast Duck. Ordering their Ten Herbal Roast Duck (RM43/S$13.80 each) should be a simple task.

The richly flavoured herb sauce was so rich, I felt like I could get back to health in just one sip. Each bite is a delightful sequence of crispy fat-lined skin followed by a burst from the tender duck meat.

7.Warung Saga

Warung Saga is a great place to go if you are looking for a hearty meal. Although it may be hard to find, Warung Saga has been in operation since 1986. Its food and atmosphere make it stand apart from the rest.

Warung Saga serves a unique version of dry lontong, which is not only a classic Malay dish like Nasi Lemak (RM3/S$1). Lontong Kering, a dish also known as Lontong Kering, is a combination of ketupat rice and a peanut sambal sauce. It’s served with stir-fried vegetables and a large chunk of chicken. Hearsay says that this breakfast staple sells out before 11 AM. So make sure you get there early in the morning.
