Will There Be a Sequel, and When?

After the rollercoaster ride that Old Guard provided to its viewers, it was interesting to see whether or not the makers would carry forth the film as a franchise of its own. The post-credits scene of Old Guard, which saw the character of Booker encounter a figure who could possibly be Quynh, Andy’s first immortal associate, raised multiple questions regarding whether or not the film would have a sequel.

Gina Prince-Bythewood, the director of the film, stated that the post-credits scene in question was a set-up for a potential sequel. She also went on to hint that the film may have not one, but two sequels thereby establishing a trilogy, as this was what Greg Rucka, the writer of the original comic book, had envisioned it to be.

To add to this, earlier this year in the month of June, Charlize Theron who plays the lead role of Andy in the film, confirmed that a script for the sequel was completed. While there have been no official updates regarding a release date for the sequel, production and filming are expected to go on floors early in 2022. Thus a release date towards the latter half of 2022 can be expected unless any production delays surface.

Will the Cast Return for the Sequel?

As of now, no official reports have claimed whether or not the original cast would re-appear to star in the sequel. There is a possibility that some of the actors may return, given that the films follow the storyline set by the comics. Speculations are that the sequel would adapt a screenplay set by the second comic, according to which the characters of Andy, played by Charlize Theron, and Nile Freeman, played by KiKi Layne would be expected to grace the screen again.

One thing is for sure, if all the reports and speculations pan out to be true, it would be interesting to see how the makers take the film forward after the success of the first installment.
