LoL Worlds 2022 Details

LoL Worlds 2022 takes place over a period of 5 weeks, between September 29th – November 5th, in 4 different locations: Mexico City, New York, Atlanta, and San Francisco. Teams from 11 different leagues will take part in it and one of them will be crowned the new world champion. The initial prize pool of the event is $2,225,000.

Competitive Format

The competitive format of Worlds 2022 will include 4 stages:

Play-In Round 1

This stage takes place between September 29th – October 2nd. During these 4 days, the 12 Play-In teams will compete in 2 groups of 6. For each group, the Single Round Robin format will be used. Every match is Bo1.

The top teams from every group advance to the Group Stage, while the 2nd – 4th place teams advance to the second round of the Play-In Stage.

Group A:

  • Beyond Gaming
  • Chiefs Esports Club
  • DetonatioN FocusMe
  • Evil Geniuses
  • Fnatic
  • LOUD

Group B:

  • DragonX
  • Isurus
  • MAD Lions
  • Royal Never Give Up
  • Saigon Buffalo
  • Istanbul Wildcats

The big favorites in group A are Fnatic, Evil Geniuses, and DetonatioN FocusMe. If everything goes according to what the statistics indicate, Fnatic should be the winners.

In group B, DragonX, MAD Lions, and Royal Never Give Up are all very strong teams with real chances of winning. The battle here will be tough for all 3 competitors.

Play-In Round 2 (October 3rd – 4th)

This stage of Worlds 2022 consists of 2 independent races. Each race consists of a Semifinals match and a Grand Final match.

In the Semifinals, the competitors will be the 3rd and 4th place teams from group A and the 3rd and 4th place teams from group B respectively. In the 2 Grand Finals await the 2nd place teams from the two groups but the seeding is interchanged.

The winner between the 3rd and 4th place teams from group A will play against the 2nd place team from group B. And vice versa.

In the end, 2 teams from the Play-In Round 1 and 2 teams from the Play-In Round 2 will advance to the Group Stage.

Group Stage (October 7th – 10th and 13th – 16th)

In many people’s eyes, this is the real starting point of the tournament because most of the best teams on the planet do not compete in the Play-In stages.

The Group Stage features 4 groups of 4 teams and each group uses the Double Round Robin format. Every match is Bo1. This means that each team gets to play twice against every other team in the group. The best 2 teams advance to the Playoffs while the bottom 2 teams get eliminated.

Group A:

  • Cloud9
  • EDward Gaming
  • T1
  • ?

The favorites in Group A will be EDward Gaming and T1. But a lot depends on who else will come from the Play-In stages. However, regardless of who the 4th team will be, these two competitors seem really hard to beat and Cloud9 have little to no chance against them.

Many believe that this is the year when Faker makes an epic comeback and wins Worlds for the 4th time. But it will be very difficult for him to do that. In the Playoffs of LCK Summer 2022, T1 lost the Grand Final versus Gen.G Esports without winning a single game. And at MSI 2022, back in May, T1 lost the Grand Final against RNG (2 – 3).

Group B:

  • DAMWON Gaming
  • G2 Esports
  • JD Gaming
  • ?

This will be the toughest group of Worlds 2022. Every single team in this group will be tough to beat and it all depends on tournament form. In theory, G2 Esports and JD Gaming should have the advantage, but it’s hard to be confident in their chances when you know how tough the competition is in LCK.

The fact that DAMWON were “only” the winners of the LCK Regional Finals doesn’t mean anything. It all comes down to how the playstyle of Chinese and European teams works against that of South Korean teams. We’ll find out soon enough.

Group C:

  • GAM Esports
  • Rogue
  • Top Esports
  • ?

This should be an easy group for Top Esports and Rogue, although Rogue might not finish in the top 2 if one of the stronger Play-In teams gets sent here. Top Esports are probably the second-best team in China, so their Playoffs spot is almost guaranteed.

Group D:

  • 100 Thieves
  • CTBC Flying Oyster
  • Gen.G Esports
  • ?

If a strong South Korean or Chinese team gets sent here from the Play-In stages, 100 Thieves are in trouble. CTBC have almost no chance of qualifying for the Playoffs, while Gen.G will likely finish the group with a perfect record.

After all, they are the strongest team in South Korea and that region is famous for its esports prowess, not just in LoL but in other competitive games as well.

Playoffs (Main Event: October 20th – 23rd, October 29th – 30th, November 5th)

The Main Event of Worlds 2022 will be amazing. Each match during this stage is Bo5 and takes place on a separate day. The fans get plenty of time to enjoy the action and absolutely nothing is rushed. Every single day of the Knockout Stage feels like a new Grand Final.

Who Will Be The Winner?

The last 9 editions of Worlds were won by Chinese and South Korean teams. This year, the only competitor outside of these two regions that could potentially win is G2 Esports. Will they upset the giants or will this LoL World Championship be more of the same?

League of Legends is one of the biggest esports games of all time. So if you love esports, even if you don’t play LoL, you should watch this tournament. Because it will be absolutely epic. But if you love LoL and want to support Riot Games even more than you already do, you can purchase the mouse they built in association with Logitech G.
