GitHub is well known for being a provider of Internet hosting for software development and version control using Git. It is an insanely popular company having around 56 Million users according to the 2020 Report.
It was a nightmare for GitHub when they learned that one of the employees, Julie Horvath, decided to quit her job due to facing a sexist internal culture. One of the things that create more controversy is that she is one of those who promote women in technology in the company. During her initial tweets, she never stated the reason why she left the company?
The explanation behind her exit from the company
During her interview with TechCrunch, she explains the significant allegations towards GitHub, its internal agreements, and its culture. She joined the company in 2002 at that time the company was indeed supportive towards females. At that time, she was the only female designer or developer on the team.
Even though the company stated that it is a female-friendly environment she finds it difficult toused use to the company’s culture. The reason for this is that the aggressive communication on pull requests and how little the men she worked with respected and valued her opinion.
The reason behind why she loved her job at GitHub is that it was the place people went to stuff for people who make stuff.
She even put the light on how unhealthy the environment was in GitHub by saying that she participated in the boys’ club upon joining but when her character started being examined in problematic places like on pull requests and issues.
She even struggled a lot while welcoming female developers in GitHub and she considered that it is a serious problem.There are a lot of issues that need to analyse according to her. Her story is the spotlight on many of the sexual harassment issues of major companies that ever get the attention that it needed. She doesn’t regret her decision of quitting GitHub as it has given her mental peace.
